On Wednesday, the Council approved Resolution 19-329, which would creates a pathway for the city to establish a Youth Commission. The commission would be compromised of youth throughout Oʻahu that would advise policy, the Mayor, and programs as well as prioritize an agenda on behalf of youth.

UPDATE: Since resolution calls for a City Charter amendment which requires a vote from the public it will be on the upcoming General Election!

Why this is important:
There is a growing movement of youth that have proven their commitment, compassion, and eagerness to seek equitable solutions on issues they care about. Though the climate crisis is a common issue voiced by youth, it is certainly not the only one. Over the past year, we have been engaged in a youth public policy program focused on a series of youth-led initiatives. Through this program, we have identified several leaders who are committed to civic engagement, community centered solutions with equity at its core. Our conversations with students from middle school to early college, demonstrate that they are operating from a holistic framework that connects climate change to racial justice in frontline communities, root causes of extractive capitalism and systemic racism threatening a fair and equitable future, as well as diversifying economic opportunities for youth to stay in Hawaii after graduation. It is clear that youth are deeply concerned about their future and are equally passionate about being a part of the decision-making process to address it. Our only recommendation at this time is in the selection process for the commission.

We feel it is critical to be intentional of diverse representation of youth commissioners to ensure there is equitable access to the decision-making process.
