Become a Hike Leader

Do you enjoy hiking and meeting new people? Want to connect others to nature and inspire them to mālama ‘āina? The Sierra Club O‘ahu Group is always looking for new volunteer leaders to join our “Outings Program” and help us lead our weekly hikes and service projects. Our leaders are a critical part of our grassroots environmental organization and have been leading hikes in Hawai‘i for the past 50 years!

As a leader, you will join us in our conservation efforts and help others explore, enjoy, and protect O‘ahu. You will also learn about O‘ahu’s unique geology, native plants and wildlife, and receive training in First Aid/CPR and other valuable outdoors skills.

Criteria to become a certified Outings Leader:

  1. Be a Sierra Club member and at least 18 years old

  2. Be certified in the American Red Cross Basic First Aid/CPR training (we cover the costs)

  3. Complete the Sierra Club Online Leaders Training OLT 101

  4. Assist 4-10 Outings (help leaders with church/trailhead talks, scout, lead, or sweep hikes)

  5. Successfully complete the Training Checklist and Hike Reports

  6. Have knowledge of the O‘ahu Group’s Plant List

  7. Receive final application approval from the Outings Chair and Committee

All provisional leaders are given a mentor to guide you through the process and help you complete certification.
